OpenAI DevDay: Dots, the Decisions API and GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI shows approximately 20 new features at its DevDay. Javi and Rafa select three: Dots, the Decisions API and GPT-6.1 Sol. The Decisions API is the OpenAI version of decision models like Jev. Also, Codex CLI gets a new full-screen interface that is more similar to Claude Code.

GPT-6.1 Sol gives almost the intelligence of Astra at one fifth of the price. It costs half the price of Opus 5.5. Cached input costs half the price of Sol 6, and in a normal conversation it is approximately 80% of the tokens. Sol 6.1 at medium effort also works very well for computer use. Rafa gives a caution: without Opus 5.5 last week, the impact would be larger.

Dots is a persistent assistant that runs 24/7 in ChatGPT. It uses Astra, and its primary use is included in the plan. The Codex tasks that it starts use your quota, like a normal task. Dots coordinates subagents in separate conversations, connects to Slack and accepts voice calls while you send it text.

Javi tests Dots for two days. The key change is that Dots is reactive: it reads Slack through MCP and tells you things without a request. Javi sees a risk in Slack: another person can ask about your calendar, and only the model decides to answer or not. He also sees a strong vendor lock-in: the more connectors you add, the more difficult it is to change assistants. Watch in the video.

Codely pays its debt to open source: $50 for 30 maintainers, live

Codely promised to donate $50 each month to five maintainers of the dependencies that it uses most. The last donation was in March. Live on stream, Javi makes the retroactive donation: $50 for 30 maintainers, $1,500 in total. The process takes two clicks: on github.com/sponsors, you export your dependencies to CSV, add the amount and import the file in bulk sponsorship.

The demo has problems. GitHub goes down two times, and the payment shows the error unicorn. When Javi tries again, GitHub says that 12 donations are already in process, so the total can be $3,000. GitHub accepts only 29 of the 30 maintainers: TJ requires a minimum of $400. Javi and Rafa ask companies to use the same process. Watch in the video.

Sonnet 5.5: fast and cheap, but Opus 5.5 at medium is better for coding

Anthropic releases Sonnet 5.5, a short time after Opus 5.5. With the $100 or $200 subscription, Opus 5.5 uses few tokens and does not reach the limits. For daily development, Opus 5.5 at medium gives better results than Sonnet 5.5. Sonnet 5.5 is useful for fast tasks and computer use. With the $20 subscription or the API through Bedrock, Sonnet 5.5 is the choice for price.

Anthropic says that Haiku 5.5 comes soon. Rafa has a theory: Claude Code can use Haiku again by default for web fetch subagents. Since Opus 5, subagents use the same model as the main agent. For Rafa, Anthropic gets its mojo back, and the competition with OpenAI and open source models helps. Watch in the video.

The utility of the week

BannerHither

An open source macOS utility that moves notification banners to the screen where you work. It finds the screen with the focused window. It can also use the screen with the mouse, or always use the same screen. You install it with Homebrew.

The chat weighs in

FabioCardonaG: When benchmarks reach 100%, how will we measure the capabilities of the next models?

JotaRguezD: I think they removed Terra, and it does not make much sense now with the new Luna and the new Sol

FabioCardonaG: Javi, you must do the Manager Pro course, and you will learn to give feedback in private

The saying of the week

«Do not sign a letter that you do not read, do not drink water that you do not see, and do not accept terms and conditions that you do not scroll»
