10 Years of Codely - Part 1: Programming is NOT for brainiacs

30 September 2025 | project

It's been 10 years since we uploaded our first video to YouTube. VS Code had just hit the market and Kubernetes was a few months away 😅.

In this series of posts, we want to share part of that journey with the people who have been following us. Without those little people who trust us and support us, it's obvious that we wouldn't have been able to make it even 5 years, so today we want to reciprocate that trust with a bit of transparency 😊.

  • What has happened all this time?
  • How have we experienced it?
  • What keeps us motivated?

Introductions done, let's start with the first part 🤟:

Programming is NOT for brainiacs

Codely started as a YouTube channel. The goal was nothing more and nothing less than to share knowledge and raise awareness about topics that matter once you already know how to code.

Here's the first video on the channel, which served as a "statement of intent" and public commitment to not be just another side-project that gets left behind:

Things we saw in our day-to-day that, despite seeming disconnected, precisely encouraged us to upload that first video:

  • On one hand, youth unemployment in Spain above 50%.
  • On the other hand, at that same moment, many people were needed in the sector.
  • Content that "set the standard." Something we didn't connect with.
  • Scarcity of technical content beyond "how to get started with X framework." Lack of community around good practices and architecture.

This reality we lived pushed us to contribute our grain of sand with the idea of breaking down the aura that surrounded programming back then:

I'm not good enough for programming. You have to be very smart and know a lot of math for that.

Why break it down, seeing the 4 aspects above, is clear: That aura does us a disservice as a sector and as a society. Society understood as something close, as the environment that surrounds us. Being honest, from Codely we have never felt a need to "leave a mark on the world."

We have never been on the side of gate-keeping. Not back then, nor now when people criticize those doing vibe coding "because they don't know the basics." Just let the bois roll how they wanna roll, man.

All this sounds very good and all, but we need to bring it down to earth. Concrete examples of things done along those lines back in 2015:

  • Interview with Pablo: Giving visibility to people we admire for, even back then, achieving extraordinary things while being close and simple like anyone else. Breaking down myths and auras.
  • Interview with Pol: Fighting against the mantra of "consultancies are Evil" and also showing the good part of working at-certain consultancies.
  • Video "How to listen to your tests": You can talk about things with substance with an approach that tries to be entertaining.

Now I watch the videos and, no matter how much I tried, everything was still quite restrained. Fantasy was missing, and for that we need to introduce a crucial piece in all this. See you in the next chapter of this post series 😊. If you don't want to miss it, you can subscribe to the newsletter:
